On Wednesday, Mo Brooks indicated his belief that tumbling rocks and silt are at least partially to blame for rising ocean levels. Such assertions contradict the virtual consensus among the scientific community and the overwhelming amount of scientific data that demonstrates a causal link between climate change and rising sea levels.

What's more, Brooks' opinion contradicts the very scientific community he is currently charged to represent, since NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center lies in the heart of Congressional District 5. According to NASA, "Sea level rise is caused primarily by two factors related to global warming: the added water from melting ice sheets and glaciers and the expansion of seawater as it warms."

Science and Technology are each principal drivers of North Alabama's local economy. It is important that our congressional representative both understands at an elementary level the work of our scientists and respects their expertise. Mr. Brooks' insistence on spreading falsehoods about climate change and its effects on ocean levels reveals that he is either woefully ignorant of the scientific community's well-documented position on climate change or indifferent toward it. Neither circumstance is good for North Alabamians or our country.
